Assignment #5

Podcast

Description

After the Podcast Outline has been completed, your group is responsible for creating a recording of the podcast. As podcasts are digital audio files, your audience will not have any visuals to refer to. You’ll need to set up a quiet area to record (as background noise can be picked up easily) and then you’ll be ready to record. Remember to speak clearly, be conscious of your tone and ensure that the podcast transitions smoothly.

Each podcast will be a maximum 10 minutes in length, and must include the following:

  • Introduction of group members (2 minutes)

  • Historical background of the topic (3 minutes)

  • Contemporary ways of challenging the topic (4 minutes)

  • Conclusion and outro (1 minute)

Instructions

Since podcasts as a medium are typically recorded in one take, the occasional stutter or incorrect word choice is nothing to worry about. In person, the easiest way to record a podcast is to center a smartphone around a table and record using an audio recording software. If you’re not in the same room as your group, using Zoom is a fantastic choice as after setting up the meeting, there’s an option to record the call and download the files after for playback purposes.

Pro tip: use free apps for Android RecForge II + Audio Recorder and iPhone VoiceMemos

Following the recording and downloading of the podcast, all that’s left is the editing. Using Audacity (a free editing software), you can do anything from cutting out preambles, adding soundtracks or sound effects and adjusting the volume of specific parts to keep auditory consistency.
